CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Wyoming/Colorado border

About fifteen minutes before passing into Colorado, Gary dared to think that everything might turn out okay. The convoy he had haphazardly been made a part of was moving along the roadways at incredible speed. From his cramped little seat in the back of the not-really-an-ambulance, someone near the back of the line of vehicles radioed in to Watson up front and complained about the speed.

“Unless everyone back there has forgotten,” Watson barked in response, “we’ve got a killer plant surging toward us. So if it’s all the same to everyone, I’d like to make good time while we can.”

The broadcast came from a portable radio installed in the back of the truck—a vehicle he was finding harder to think of as an actual ambulance now that he had been granted space in the back. There were shelves and small cabinets installed along the walls, but there was a strange industrial feel to the space. Strip all of the shelves and cabinets out, and he’d find it easy to believe he was sitting in the back of a U-Haul.

But in the center of that strange space, on a gurney that was sitting firmly in a set of adjustable grooves in the floor, Dylan was resting. Maybe resting wasn’t the exact term for it, but it was how Gary was choosing to see it. There were two IVs inserted into his left arm. The IV that was responsible for the blood transfusion had been strapped to the wall between two cabinets to ensure it moved as little as possible during the trip. Seeing the cramped and cluttered space the two medics in the back had to work with made Gary appreciate the hard work they’d performed so much more. It also made him a little guilty for being so insistent that he be back there with Dylan. But the medics seemed to understand and even though there was hardly any available room to move around or even stretch their legs or arms, they never complained.

Now, following the complaints regarding the speed of the convoy, ten minutes had gone by without either of the medics saying anything. They were literally just keeping tabs on Dylan’s vitals and breathing. His breathing seemed almost normal as far as Gary could tell. If not for his bloodied, bruised chest and the pale color to his flesh, Gary might have thought his son was only asleep. Then, of course, there were the two IVs that also ruined that peaceful illusion.

“So…Fort Collins,” Gary said, mainly because he just couldn’t handle the silence. “Does the base have an entire medical facility?”

The medic closest to him shook his head. He was middle-aged with a hardened look to his eyes—the sort of man who likely only ever spoke if it was absolutely necessary. He had a grizzled, lonely look about him. His jaw was perfectly square and the slight wrinkles along the lower half of his face looked as if they’d never been turned upward in a smile.

It was the other medic who answered.
